The Moroccan rug trend has been circulating around for some time among high-end designer portfolios and home fashion magazines, but now I am excited to see them gone "main stream" and available online, and through favorite go-to design retail spots such as West Elm.
A SOUK rug , (Souk meaning, from an Arab market or Marketplace) is very versatile and offers a beautiful and natural textural "canvas" for the floor without the distraction of too much color or pattern. It's a very airy and soft look. I've seen it beautifully used in modern and new traditional spaces. If you prefer a cozy foot but don't want the color or pattern comittment , the Souk style rug, is a perfect choice.
One of my favorite if not THE favorite resources for SOUK rugs can be found here, at Imports from Marrakesh. They offer a full line of designs originating from the Beni Ourain tribe (of the mountains of Morocco).
All of their rugs have the same ivory background color in wool but offer pattern and design variations in a similar line weight. If you favor the criss cross look, West Elm carries a great looking and affordable version of the original.
I am so in love with this rug, it may actually inspire me to yank out the living room carpet and put this atop a newly laid wood floor. Hubby may just give that SOUK thumbs up.
